Coco Gauff super happy in Berlin

The number one seed Coco Gauff (WTA rank 2) left nothing to be desired in her first singles match on grass this year: 7:6 and 6:2 against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

This strong performance was a relief for Gauff. She was almost even more emotionally moved by her encounter with a fan, who was moved to tears by this brief exchange: "It means a lot to me. I'm happy when I can give something to people." The Berlin audience loves Gauff - and Gauff loves Berlin. She soaks up everything the city has to offer. In her free time, she visits music stores and book stores, and uses an e-scooter to get around "on the great cycle paths here".

Tears for Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova

Marketa Vondrousova (WTA rank 6), the 2023 Wimbledon winner, had traveled to Berlin with ambitions of winning. However, she was forced to retire in tears at 5:5 in the first set against Anna Kalinskaya. She had suffered an injury to her right hip. Tournament director Barbara Rittner is keeping her fingers crossed that the Czech will be fit again by the start of Wimbledon on July 1: "Marketa is not a player who gives up so easily."
