Victoria Azarenka defeats Angelique Kerber
Angelique Kerber failed to reach the quarter-finals. The German number one lost to the former world number one and Australian Open winner of 2012 and 2013, Victoria Azarenka, after 1:22 hours 3:6, 5:7. Kerber even had the chance to win the second set at 5:3 and on her own serve, but then lost four games in a row to the Belarusian, who finally managed to convert her fourth match point.
"I simply made two or three too many errors in the second set when I was leading. That was the deciding factor today," said the 33-year-old German, who feels "a lot more comfortable on grass than she did last time on clay" but is travelling to Wimbledon "without any great expectations". "I just want to enjoy it again."
Meanwhile, sixth seed Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain advanced confidently to the quarter-finals of the €456,073 WTA grass-court tournament. The former Wimbledon winner beat Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) 6:4, 6,3. Qualifier Liudmila Samsonova (Russia) also made it to the last eight with a 6-4, 6-3 win over her compatriot Veronika Kudermetova. In the last round of the day, fourth seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic lost to Jessica Pegula of the USA 5-7, 2-6.

From Friday, 18 June 2021, 1,000 people a day will also be allowed to play at the LTTC "Rot-Weiß" e.V. facility instead of the previous 500. This was decided by the Berlin Senate with the Third SARS-CoV-2 Infection Control Measures Ordinance, which will come into force on 18 June 2021. "We are very pleased that from Friday we will be able to offer even more fans the chance to experience tennis live. The atmosphere in the stands is also extremely good for the players," explains Tournament Director Barbara Rittner.
